School Groups Focus on Helping Union Station Feed the Hungry

One of the missions behind Chandler's School Groups is to unify the entire student body, and this year's focus on service learning has played a key role. The resulting character and leadership development was evident when our groups met in the gym Wednesday, Dec. 10. From a seventh grader reading aloud her This I Believe essay about feeding the hungry, to discussing how some fifth graders learned about Union Station's 40-year history helping the needy, to promoting the canned food drive launched by some of our third graders, you could feel the convergence of good will and effort to make a difference in the community.

Not only are Chandler students helping gather canned goods for Union Station, but they also are honing their communication skills. They are reaching out to our broader community to encourage every one of us to donate a can of food by the time vacation begins.
Here are some of the clever Tweets, slogans and hashtags that Students Groups came up with:

Group 15: "CAN we donate? Yes we CAN!"

Group 12:  "Please bring food for Union Station. Help us help our hungry nation."
Group 2: "Keep calm and give a can."

Group 23: "We're collecting food at Chandler this year. Let's bring canned goods to spread holiday cheer! By providing people in need with food to eat We help get them back up on their feet. This year, to the homeless we give, to help them prosper and live. Mashed potatoes, bottle water and salad dressing...These are some of the items to bring!"

Group 33: “Did u know LA has 2nd highest homeless pop. in the nation? Help by donating food 2 Union Station #ThxfromChandler

We hope you will follow more of their ideas on social media. Finally, here is one of their invitations to you to support their efforts:

"With the holidays nearby, what first comes to mind is food. Union Station is hosting a Christmas party and needs your help! You can donate instant mashed potatoes (26 oz. or more), Italian salad dressing (16 oz. or more) and bottled water (16 oz. or more) to help feed the needy. Even one item can help provide a Merry Christmas and happy holiday cheer!" (from group 6, Mrs. Izbicki's group)
